A Complicated Material Brushes Against Us

2017, acrylic, wire, canvas

A pulling up of the complicated and oppressive systems both physical and psychological that push against us, towards constructing new screens and signs that can re-shape and assign a more positive lived experience for Black people in Canada.

Affair 1969

2012, paint, wire, canvas

Shaped wire and the shadows it casts represent the students, their supporters, the crowd, the observer in the 1969 Sir George Williams Affair. Buildings and computer cards signify repressive systems, which acted against the students, the Black community in Montreal, and the broader transnational/Caribbean Black population. The arm as both lever and support, embody other episodes of trauma and struggle, invoking the spirit of resistance.
